Medical Leadership

Dr. Leonard A. Minuk, MD, FRCPC, graduated from the University of Manitoba medical school in 2004 and obtained residency training in Internal Medicine and subspecialty training in Hematology at the University of Western Ontario. He worked as a clinical hematologist at London Health Sciences Centre (London, Ontario) from 2009 to 2016 and was an associate professor of medicine at the University of Western Ontario. While in London he served as the medical director of the Malignant Hematology Clinical Trials Unit, the medical director of the South Western Ontario Regional Hemophilia Program, and the chair of the Hematology Disease Site Group at the London Regional Cancer Program. On a provincial level, he served as the representative of LRCP on the Cancer Care Ontario Hematology Cancer Disease Site Group. Nationally, he was a board member of the Association of Hemophilia Clinic Directors of Canada and has served as the representative for both Regions 2 and 3 for the Hematology Specialty Committee of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

Dr. Minuk moved back to Winnipeg in 2016 and is currently a clinical hematologist at CancerCare Manitoba and an associate professor at the Max Rady College of Medicine at the University of Manitoba. His clinical practice and research interests include plasma cell disorders and lymphoma. He served as the Director of the Clinical Trials Unit at CancerCare Manitoba from 2016 to 2020. Dr. Minuk is the head of the Section of Hematology/Oncology through the Department of Internal Medicine and the head of the Department of Medical Oncology and Hematology at CancerCare Manitoba

Dr. Rashmi Koul, MD, CCPE, FRCPC, completed her medical school and postgraduate training in Radiation Oncology from India in 1998. She moved to Canada in 2001 and completed residency in Radiation Oncology at CancerCare Manitoba (CCMB)/University of Manitoba in 2007. She worked at Saskatchewan Cancer Agency (SCA) as a staff Radiation Oncologist from 2007-2013. She was the key person to launch DSG rounds at SCA and served as the provincial leader of thoracic malignancies and chair of provincial lung rounds at Saskatchewan Cancer Agency. She was awarded the title of Canadian Certified Physician Executive by CMA in the spring of 2013. Dr. Koul has more than 20 years of involvement in clinical Radiation Oncology and active teaching. Dr. Koul has more than 100 publications to her credit and her research work has been presented at highly acclaimed national and international conferences. She has been awarded multiple competitive research grants and awards for oncology-related research including nominations for mentorship awards.

Dr. Koul is the Medical Director, Radiation Oncology Program, CCMB and Head of Radiation Oncology, Department of Radiology, University of Manitoba. Dr. Koul is heavily involved in introducing new state-of-the-art technology in various oncological settings in order to serve Manitobans well. She has pioneered many innovative ways to reach out to patients in Manitoba for rapid access to the radiation services. She is working on various initiatives within CCMB and with other organizations in Manitoba and outside of the province to serve our oncology patients in a timely and effective fashion. Dr. Koul has goals, commitment and drive to achieve the best for the Manitobans. Dr. Koul is heavily involved in a Global Oncology drive to help low-income group countries to set up new state-of-the-art Radiotherapy machines and exchange knowledge. She currently is involved in developing strategies to jointly improve cancer control worldwide and reduce mortality.

Dr. Geoff Cuvelier, MD, FRCPC, has been a Pediatric Oncologist-Hematologist at CancerCare Manitoba since 2008 and is the Section Head for Pediatric Hematology-Oncology-BMT at CancerCare Manitoba and the Department of Pediatrics since 2020. Dr. Cuvelier takes care of infants, children and adolescents with a variety of cancers and blood disorders. His particular interest is in stem cell transplant for a variety of childhood cancers (e.g. leukemia) and non-cancer conditions (e.g. immune deficiencies and blood disorders), where he directs the Pediatric Blood and Marrow Transplant program. He provides care for patients at both CancerCare Manitoba and the Winnipeg Children’s Hospital.

Dr. Cuvelier received his medical degree from the Max Rady College of Medicine (University of Manitoba), completed his Pediatrics Residency at the Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton (University of Alberta), and his Pediatric Hematology-Oncology-BMT fellowship at the British Columbia Children’s Hospital in Vancouver (University of British Columbia). He is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Manitoba. He has been involved as a principal investigator and co-investigator in a number of clinical trials, including the Applied Biomarkers of Late Effects of Childhood Cancer study and in studies of the Primary Immune Deficiency Treatment Consortium.

Dr. Szwajcer is an academic Hematologist based at CancerCare Manitoba and the Health Sciences Center in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

He is the Manitoba Blood and Marrow Transplant Program Director as well as the medical director of the Cellular Therapy Laboratory which supports a GMP manufacturing facility.
