Professional Development Awards

The Community Oncology Program is pleased to offer professional development opportunities in oncology. These awards are designed for family physicians and nurse practitioners in the province, as well as health professionals affiliated with the Community Oncology Program, who would like to enhance their knowledge and skills in cancer care and blood disorders.

Eligible areas of training include, but are not limited to:

  • prevention, screening and early detection, treatment, management and follow-up
  • pain and symptom management
  • chemotherapy and central venus access device (CVAD) care
  • end-of-life care
  • psychosocial/spiritual and supportive care

Types of Awards

You can apply for:

  • 1-2 weeks of personalized training based on learning needs. Spots may be limited given the context of the pandemic.
  • Registration fees for an oncology-related conference or course.
  • Fees for oncology-related certification or re-certification (up to $500 annually).

We are pleased to offer a second intake for the 2023-2024 Community Oncology Program Professional Development Award. Eligible applicants may complete the application form by clicking here. Applications are due by Friday, April 12, 2024. Applicants will be contacted by May 2024 regarding the outcome of their application. 

Please note that all applications for this intake should pertain to education activities occurring within 2024. For planned 2025 education activities, please apply during the fall application period for the 2024-2025 award cycle. Thank you. 

Continuing Education Credits

Recipients may apply for continuing education credits through their professional organization. Family physicians may apply for self-learning credits from the College of Family Physicians in Canada.

Selection of Recipients

Preference will be given to strong applicants who:

  • Have been in their positions for one year or more;
  • Show evidence of a sincere and enthusiastic interest in cancer care/blood disorders;
  • Describe clear and realistic learning objectives in their application.

Expectations and Benefits

All recipients will be encouraged to commit to serving as a cancer care resource to their community or practice group at the end of the traineeship for a minimum of two years.

Family physicians and nurse practitioners who are successful applicants will be asked to commit to accepting the referral of a minimum of six new cancer patients needing a family physician over the 12 months following the completion of their traineeship. This will help support patients who lack primary care providers.
